Entering their early 20s to early 30s, many people experience a phase known as Quarter Life Crisis (QLC), a period full of confusion, anxiety, and pressure in facing various demands of life. This period is often marked by big questions about career, relationships, finances, and unclear life goals. It is not surprising that stress often becomes a daily companion during this period.
Stress during the Quarter Life Crisis is not just ordinary fatigue or pressure. It is a psychological response that can significantly affect mental health and quality of life if not managed properly. Therefore, understanding and applying effective stress coping methods is key to getting through this phase in a healthier and more productive way.
What is Coping Stress?
Coping with stress refers to the ways in which we deal with and manage emotional and situational pressures. In the context of a quarter-life crisis, coping with stress helps individuals adjust to uncertainty and the demands of life that feel overwhelming.
According to the theory proposed by Lazarus and Folkman (in Sari, 2022), coping is divided into two main types:
Problem-focused coping: strategies that focus on directly solving the problems that cause stress. For example, rethinking your career, finding a mentor, or taking new skills training.
Emotion-focused coping: strategies that focus on managing emotions to remain stable, such as meditation, journaling, exercise, or talking to a trusted person.
Why is Coping with Stress Important During a Quarter Life Crisis (QLC)?
Not everyone has the same social support and emotional skills to cope with stress. During QLC, ineffective coping skills can lead to excessive anxiety, depression, and even physical disorders such as insomnia or indigestion.
On the contrary, proper coping can help maintain mental health, find creative solutions to life's problems, increase self-confidence and self-control, and strengthen social relationships and emotional support.
Stress Coping Strategies for Young Adults
Here are some coping strategies you can try to manage stress during QLC:
Recognize and Accept Your Feelings
Realize that confusion and anxiety are normal. Accept these emotions without judging yourself.
Set Priorities and Make a Plan
Make a list of things you can change and focus on one issue at a time. Small, realistic plans can help reduce feelings of overwhelm.
Seek Social Support
Don't hesitate to share your story with friends, family, or professionals such as psychologists. Social support has been proven to strengthen mental resilience.
Take Time for Yourself
Meditation, exercise, hobbies, and enjoyable activities help reduce stress hormones and improve mood.
Learn New Skills
Developing new skills not only opens up opportunities but also boosts your confidence.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Get enough sleep, eat nutritious food, and avoid consuming alcohol or addictive substances that can exacerbate stress.
Conclusion
A quarter-life crisis can indeed be a major challenge, but that doesn't mean it can't be overcome. By understanding the concept of coping with stress and applying the right strategies, young adults can get through this period stronger and better prepared for the future. Remember, there's no shame in seeking professional help if you feel overwhelmed.
