EXPLORE THE BENEFITS OF COFFEE CONSUMPTION TO OVERCOME STRESS

The trend of coffee consumption in Indonesia has grown rapidly in recent years. According to research data from the Snapcart team on coffee consumption trends, it was found that the majority of Indonesians (79%) are coffee lovers who consume coffee every day. Currently, various coffee shops have emerged in Indonesia, ranging from well-known brands such as Kopi Kenangan, Kopi Tuku, and Tomorro Coffee to coffee stalls or coffee sold from carts, commonly known as Starling. The current trend among young people is to hang out and socialize with friends at coffee shops, where such activities have almost become a tradition and lifestyle, as well as a means to show their existence.
Coffee is one of the most popular and beloved beverages in Indonesia because it can relieve fatigue, drowsiness, and stress. Coffee is known for its high caffeine content; one cup of coffee (120-480 ml) contains 75-400 mg of caffeine or more (Liunima et al., 2017). Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, a diuretic, stimulates the heart muscle, and relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi, which can relieve typical symptoms of stress such as forgetfulness, anxiety, and feelings of depression. Lazarus (in Lumonga, 2009) describes stress as a form of interaction between an individual and their environment, which the individual perceives as burdensome or beyond their capabilities and threatening to their well-being.
When an individual experiences stress, there is a need to reduce that stress. One way to do this is by consuming caffeine in a cup of coffee, which is believed to relieve stress. It is not uncommon for people experiencing stress to choose to sit quietly in a coffee shop while enjoying a cup of coffee and cake, as this is considered to be one way of reducing stress. This statement is supported by research findings (Richards & Smith, 2015) showing a positive and significant relationship between stress and coffee consumption behavior. This study examined 3,071 students at Cornish Academies, Cardiff. Therefore, in this case, it cannot be denied that moderate coffee consumption can help overcome symptoms of stress. Not only is it considered effective as a means of relieving stress, but the compounds in coffee also offer other benefits, including improving focus, sharpening memory, and providing antioxidants to reduce the risk of neurological diseases (Ardhi & Radjiman, 2022).
